Revolution gets a thrill out of advancements in sustainable technology. We couldn't wait to get our hands on the Tesla Roadster. Tesla Motors is the world's only automaker currently building and selling highway-capable electric cars. As of September, we were one of a lucky 700 customers to receive our Tesla. Immediately we decked it out in Revolution, and it is about town in Denver and Boulder.
The Tesla is the first automobile in production powered by an Energy Storage System (ESS) that is made up of thousands of lithium-ion battery cells. Unlike regular gasoline engines that require gear changes to maintain torque, the Tesla's single speed fixed gear allows you to have 100% torque at all times. Repeat passengers in our Tesla don't even attempt to change the radio station. At the exact moment they do, we step on it and they physically can't reach forward far enough to touch the dial.
According to the Tesla Motors' website, the Roadster is twice as energy efficient as hybrid cars and produces one-third the amount of pollution. The cost of powering the vehicle is estimated at US$0.02 per mile. Astonishing.
